N.C.'s sentinel on the Cape Fear River since 1748


Fort Johnston has served this state and nation almost continuously since 1748, making it, if not the oldest military installation in the United States, certainly among the oldest. The men who served at the fort range from colonial militia to British redcoats, Confederate Johnny Rebs and Union Billy Yanks, to Buffalo Soldiers and U.S. Air Force Air-Sea Rescue crews. The list of names associated with the small installation at the mouth of North Carolina's Cape Fear River include some of the most illustrious in our state and nation's history.
