NOTE: Last update - August 08, 2010

To The Members & Friends of the Cape Fear Civil War Round Table:

This our usual mid-summer memorandum intended to remind you that your Civil War Round Table will resume meetings in just a month and that you can save $5 if you pay your dues prior to 31 August. Just mail your payment of $25 to: CFCWRT, PO Box, 15750, Wilmington, NC 28408-5750. My thanks to the thirty eight (38) of our members who have already done so.

The first half of our schedule has been finalized with Jeff Bockert kicking off the season on 9 September with a presentation related to the Uniforms at the Fort Fisher Garrison. Jeff advises that exciting new information has recently come to light. We look forward to another of Jeff's sterling presentations.

On 14 October, Clint Johnson will discuss Jeff Davis's Trial and Imprisonment. This promises to be a particularly interesting subject - one that is still being argued.

Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Chris Fonvielle, Ms. Tonia Smith will present her Flora Cooke Stuart: Life Without Jeb on 11 November. Tonia was a member of our Round Table prior to her moving to Pinehurst where she started another round table.

Our December (9th) meeting will feature our Southport neighbor, Dr. Max Williams, who will present: General Robert E. Lee & Zebulon Vance Fight the Yankees. If the title sounds familiar, it is. Dr. Williams was to have made this presentation last year but it was postponed until December.

The five meetings in the new year will include Bert Dunkerly on 10 March (Revolutionary War Connections to the Civil War). A late March battlefield tour is being planned with the tentative destination being Gilford Court House. Our annual dinner meeting now scheduled for 10 February (UNCW).

Please continue to check our web site. Al Hines continues to update it with exciting new material and will post additions and/or changes to the existing schedule (cfcwrt.com)
I will also send a message similar to this one at the end of August with reminders and schedule additions.

Your Steering Committee trusts you are having a great summer.

Cape Fear Civil War Round Table

As we mark the half-way point in our calendar year, there are several items that I want to pass along to our membership and friends, to wit:

Member Eric Kozen advises that the National Park Service maintains a web site that is a plethora of information related to the sesquicentennial celebration of the Civil War.

National Park Service. The American Civil War Homepage

Thank you Eric !

July 1st is a significant day in American Military History: First Day at Gettysburg (1863), Capture of San Juan Hill (1898) and The First Day on the Somme (1916).

Your Steering Committee has selected the batting order for the '10-'11 season. While all respondents have not yet agreed to a date, I can report that Jeff Bockert will open the season on Thursday, 9 September and that Robert (Bert) Dunkerly will be our speaker on Thursday, 11 March. More when the schedule is complete.

We wish for all a wonderful 4th of July as we celebrate the birth of our nation 234 years ago. Be safe and please remember our deployed troops and their families.

Folks, A big huzzah for Chris’s recognition and honor. The rest of the country is learning what a fine historian we have at UNCW. The attached website has the article on Chris recognition.
